Midwives as Essential Providers of Health Care in Rural Myanmar
Midwife Ma Khin Htwe examines an expectant mother at the Ywa Ngan Township health center, south east of Mandalay. In addition to delivering babies and providing pre and post-natal care, midwives are trained to test villagers for malaria, refer those who show signs of having tuberculosis to a hospital or health center, and to provide various types of care at home, including DOTS (Directly Observed Short Course) treatment for tuberculosis.
